The session was inspired by the maxim "You can survive without oil... but you can't live without water", which is true all over the world and especially in Italy, where we could replace "water" with "groundwater". In fact, groundwater resources provide about 85% of drinking water in Italy, as well as mineral and thermal waters, irrigation and industrial needs. This invisible resource is strategic for future generations in order to guarantee human well-being and to preserve the ecosystems that depend on it. The theme of this session is the sustainability of groundwater use at the scale of the basin, the aquifer and the individual well. Contributions from basic and applied research and case studies on criteria and methods for the surveying, monitoring, assessment, development and management of groundwater in different hydrogeological environments (alluvial, fractured, karst and volcanic aquifers) are welcome. The aim of the session is to stimulate discussion on novel approaches to identify the balance between the use of groundwater resources and the mitigation of related hydrogeological, economic, social and environmental impacts under climate change scenarios.
Session sponsored by IAH Italian Chapter and SGI Sezione di Idrogeologia
